Sample Conditioning

Waste water sample conditioning:
The composition of waste water depends very much on the type of process and the composition. The picture on this page shows how waste water can look like:

  • A visual check is important. It can give us information about the particle content, total suspended solids, turbidity, foam, gas/air etc.
  • Furthermore the waste water composition provides information.  Acid, caustics, carbonates, salts, polymers, mineral oil, free oil, metals etc.
  • Lab analysis; such as TSS, BOD and COD. If the ratio COD/BOD is very high (> 6 ) then we know that the sample is very difficult to oxidise.
  • Experience of maintenance personal. The people of the plant know all about the nasty effects of their waste water. What materials it attacks and what materials in pumps and valves are capable of withstanding the waste water. Listen to them!

Use sample conditioning systems as less as possible. Design them carefully. Select, if possible, analysers that can operate without - or with less sample conditioning equipment. Use materials that do not foul easy. Avoid moving or cutting parts.

Condensate water, boiler feed water and steam:
A good designed sample conditioning panel is of great importance. Normally the conditioning system consist of:

  • secondary particle filter;
  • heat exchanger;
  • pressure reducer;
  • relief valve;
  • high temperature shutoff valve;
  • manometer;
  • temperature indicator;
  • flow meter with needle valve and flow alarm;
  • bypass needle valve;
  • fine filter;
  • etc.
