Storm Water and Rain Water Monitoring

Chemical plants, petrochemical plants and refineries are commonly  constructed as open outdoor installations. There is always a potential risk of an installation leakage causing chemicals and hydrocarbons dripping on the concrete floor. Furthermore there is a lot of activity via loading and transporting of products via trucks. 
Rain and storm water flows via the installation and via the concrete floors into small water channels and is collected into a drain channel.
Before this water can be exhausted to surface water it should be monitored. If it is contaminated the on-line analyser will generate an alarm and than this contaminated water can be collected in a large tank, a pool or a basin to be treated afterwards via a biological or chemical waste water treatment installation.

ODS offers on-line analyser systems for this application. The analyser system should be able to:

  • Respond fast; Pollution of water should be detected as fast as possible to be able to collect this polluted water.
  • Measure low and high ranges; when it starts raining the “first flush” has the highest concentration. Then the concentration will rapidly fall due to the dilution effect of the volume of rain/storm water.
  • Handle hard particles, objects, plastics etc.; The sample conditioning system should be able to handle and remove all kinds of objects and particles such as Styrofoam / foam chips, plastic bags, sand, cloth, wood etc.
  • Take a water sample that has the same composition as the total discharge volume. The sample should be taken at a turbulent location. If not available, turbulence should be introduced via a big submersible pump and fast sample loop.
