Waste Water Monitoring
ODS offers complete on-line waste water analyser systems based on a variety of analytical methods such as:
- TOC; Total Organic Carbon; the selection of the analyser should be carefully made. There are several option such ozone / radicals oxidation, UV-persulphate oxidation, catalytical combustion, thermal oxidation etc. Furthermore TOC’s are available on a continuous analytical procedure or a batch procedure. Some types of analysers offer the TOC-differential- or TOC-direct method. The different methods and also the different makes have specific advantages/disadvantages. Analytical results could be true TOC, DOC, NPOC etc. The selection of the complete analyser system should be based on the application and sample composition. The selection affects both, the analytical performance and availability/maintenance. ODS has many years of know-how and will advise the best possible solution.
- TOD; The total oxygen Demand method is getting more and more popular because it normally correlates excellent with the COD-method (chemical oxygen demand) or BOD-method (biological oxygen demand) method). The TOD method responds fast and uses no chemicals. ODS installed many TOD-analyser systems.
- TNb / total Organic Nitrogen; this TNb method is based on thermal oxidation and the measurement of nitrogen oxide. It is a useful analytical tool especially for controlling a waste water treatment plant.
- Fast COD; there are several analysers available for the rapid measuring of chemical oxygen demand (COD). Some methods are based on electrochemical oxidation, others use ozone. Correlation is always an issue of discussion. Please consult ODS for advisement.
- Fast BOD and Respiration. It is sometimes preferable to oxidise the sample via active sludge. Actually the analyser is a miniature waste water treatment plant using a cascade oxidation system with bacteria’s. The oxygen consumption is measured via a dissolved oxygen sensor. This analyser does not only measure the BOD, it also looks to the health of the bacteria’s. A respiration analyser can be a very useful tool to control a biological waste water treatment installation!
There are many reasons to monitor waste water on-line. It can be a demand of the authority. Then the standard location will be the effluent waste water discharge. In principle most on-line analysers are used to save and make money:
- Prevent spills of expensive (base) chemicals or (end) product;
- Prevent environmental issues, protect environment, keep
image up (media)
- Monitor production process, quality control
- Prevent peak influent to waste water treatment plant (protect bacteria's/active sludge)
- Control of streams to and from buffers
- Every factory pays the correct amount of money for waste water effluent costs
- Etc.
